There are many ways to go about getting a dog. A great option is to go through a shelter or foster organization, or you can also go through a breeder. Below are a few suggestions.

Pom Posse is a wonderful rescue devoted to Pomeranians and Chihuahuas and places dogs in foster homes all over the country! Wherever you are, there is sure to be a Pom near you. Foster parents are in high demand, expecially in Alabama, so if you are able and willing to open your home to a dog in need, please contact us.

The Friends of Cats and Dogs Foundation is an organization that posts listings of animals up for adoption, both those in shelters as well as those being fostered by families. It was on this site that I first found Jacques. Thanks to FCDF for courtesy-posting my fosters!

AmyzArk Rescue and Adoption is a fantastic foster organization! I highly recommend them--they are the organization that fostered my little Jacques. He was fostered locally in Homewood, AL. Please check out their site on Petfinder.com!! The best thing about a foster organization is they can tell you a LOT about each individual dog's personality and traits since there is someone actually living with the dog in their home. This way, you know exactly what you're getting into. And hey, all adoptions through AmyzArk are tax deductable!
The Alabama Animal Adoption Society is an adoption organization in Homewood, AL. Every other Saturday from 9:00-noon you can go to the Center and view pets that are available for adoption, both cats and dogs. You can also view them on the website. AAAS has very low adoption fees. To my knowledge, all pets shown at the Center are currently being fostered. This means you can get LOTS of information about each individual pet! I spent an afternoon with this organization when I was doing my dog search. The people there are great, and it would be an awesome place to volunteer! They also take donations, monetary and otherwise. They have lots of awesome dogs. Check 'em out!

This is one of the dogs I met with. His name is Fox and he's a Collie/Chow mix. He is a gorgeous, good-natured dog. His foster parents, Greg & Tay, are extremely knowledgeable and were super helpful. We had multiple meetings before deciding that Fox was just too big for Percy. He is a beautiful dog with a good heart. Please read more about him! You'll fall totally in love with him like I did. Fox is at the AAAS Center (see above) every other Saturday. Or you can fill out an application online and they will contact the family to set up a meeting.

If you decide that a breeder is for you, please be sure that your breeder is reputable! A good breeder won't let a puppy go home too early--you want to make sure he/she has plenty of time with the mother and litter mates! Also, you want a breeder who is experienced and who raises the puppies in the home. No good breeder would ever sell his/her puppies to a pet store! If you can get a reference, that's always best.
